Grandma Hoover’s Rolled Oats Cookies


This recipe is Mark’s Great-Great-Grandma Hoover’s recipe.  We have received a few different versions over the years and hopefully this is the correct one.  If anyone on Mark’s side of the family has a different version please let us know and we can compare them and try to get the correct one.

1 Cup shortening (I use butter)
2 Cups brown sugar
3 Eggs
1/2 Cup buttermilk or milk and 2 tsp vinegar, stir and set aside
1 TSP vanilla
1 TSP. soda
1 TSP baking powder
3 Cups rolled oats (old-fashioned not quick cook)
2 Cups flour

Cream together the shortening/butter, brown sugar and eggs.  Add vanilla soda and buttermilk.  Stir together the baking powder, soda, rolled oats and flour.  Slowly add the creamed mixture, stir until thoroughly mixed. 

Add chocolate chips and nuts as desired.

Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes
